An accomplished performer before she picked up a camera, director Tina Tyler is known for her innovation, creativity and originality as well as her ability to put performers at ease.

Tyler, who directs “SuperWhores,” “Black Moon Risin’,” “Fresh Out the Box” and “HandyMan” for Mercenary Pictures, began her career in the adult industry as a female performer in 1992, and quickly gained a reputation as the thinking man’s porn star during her first 11 years. She successfully made the transition from performer to director, spending another six years behind the camera, four of those exclusively for Mercenary Pictures and has been with the company since it began its own distribution. With over 40 titles under her belt, Tyler is one of the adult industry’s most prolific - and respected - female gonzo directors.

“Being a former performer gives me a unique insight as to how to ask for things from other performers,” she said. “I know how girls want to be treated because I was one of them. I treat them with the respect many directors don’t give them. I’m willing to work within their boundaries. The female talent want a woman director to do well because of the kinship of women — they want to see other woman succeed.”

Her empathy for other performers extends to the males as well. The men in the industry also hold her in high regard because she’s worked with many of them under intimate conditions. She’s learned that not pressuring her former male co-stars is just as important as keeping the same conditions for new girls in the business.

Bringing her ability to put performers at ease and maintaining a safe environment for both of them, Tyler gained a quick reputation as one of the most prominent directors in Mercenary Pictures’ stable. She proposed an idea for a solo male series that was shot for women, unlike other like movies being shot for the gay market.

“It’s something I didn’t see and it was something for women like myself who weren’t being served in the marketplace,” she said.

“HandyMan,” spawned from her idea, was an instant best-seller and helped put Mercenary Pictures and Black Viking Pictures, the subsidiary that produced the movies, as an innovator in an otherwise crowded market. Her other movies, “SuperWhores,” “Black Moon Risin’,” and “Fresh Out the Box,” also met with similar success.

“I’m very pleased that the movies I shoot have found a market not only with the usual audience of men, but with women as well,” she said. “I’d like to think that you can shoot porn for women and men, and that shooting for one doesn’t mean you aren’t shooting for the other. I also like to think I can give practical advice to women that only another woman can give.”
